John is Head of Reserves for Butterfly Conservation – overseeing their safeguarding and management, supporting the volunteers who look after them, and leading the setting up of new sites.
He has worked for Butterfly Conservation since 1996, when the Society had only 4 conservation staff.
Previously he held various posts in other conservation organisations, mostly in southwest England, working on statutory site designations, landscape surveys and protected species, particularly bats.
He took Zoology at Kings College in London, having nearly decided to study fine art instead, and has kept a keen personal interest in arts and crafts.
In practice this has entailed indulging in creative DIY and carpentry rather than drawing or painting: – “It’s my remedy to work life in front of a PC”.
