Jamie McCartney

Jamie is a full time artist working largely on private sculpture commissions and gallery pieces. In the last few years he has added digital photographic collages into his practice. With 25 years’ experience, he has a multi-disciplinary approach, creating highly finished, museum quality artworks.

When not working on commissions, his personal work often has a strong socio-political basis and is frequently experimental. He embraces tricky subject matter and new media, and constantly seeks to collaborate with other artists, scientists and the public.

His most recognised work is The Great Wall of Vagina, which was exhibited in Brighton, Cork Street in London, and at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan. It has kept him constantly in the international press since 2011.

Before he became a full time artist, he worked as a sculptor and prop maker in the film industry, working on feature films such as Casino Royale. At the same time he ran his own forge, making abstract, animal sculptures in steel. In 1997 he established what has become the UK’s most successful life-casting studio, now known as Brighton Body Casting, where he creates private and commercial sculpture commissions for clients in many countries, including celebrities, A-list artists and royals.

Jamie has exhibited in galleries in London, Dublin, Penzance, Chelsea Arts Club, Venice, Berlin, Detroit, Las Vegas, Miami and Ontario, and has regularly taken part in the Brighton Fringe Festival and Henley Festival. At the Glastonbury Festival in 2014 he created an interactive installation with Guerrilla Science. He has been commissioned to create work for Cleethorpes Lido, The Dukes of Komedia Cinema in Brighton, Art Car Parades in Manchester and Blackpool, and Egham Council. He has won numerous Awards for his work.

Jamie’s strong social conscience has led to him taking part in charity auctions for causes he supports. These include Freedom from Torture (Oxo Tower Wharf), MacMillan Cancer and Everyman.

He has lectured at Yale University, Trinity College (Dublin), in the Ukraine and at the Wellcome Trust. He has appeared on television in the UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Columbia and the Ukraine, and his artwork has been featured on BBC3, Channel 4, and in French cinema.

Jamie is the Founder and Chairman of the Sussex Artists Club and a member of the Chelsea Arts Club.
